Our Story

When My Milk Wasn't Enough

I still remember that moment vividly. Sitting in my pediatrician's office, tears streaming down my face as I admitted my newborn wasn't gaining weight. As a first-time mom and Registered Nurse, I felt like I was failing at the most basic maternal task – nourishing my baby.

The pediatrician's response? A dismissive shrug and "Just give formula."

That moment changed everything. As a medical professional, I knew there had to be better answers. As a mother determined to breastfeed, I refused to give up without exploring every possible solution.

From Desperate Mom to Determined Creator

With no family breastfeeding experience to draw from and minimal support from healthcare providers, I channeled my medical background into relentless research. I studied lactation science, became certified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and dove deep into traditional galactagogues used by cultures worldwide.

My kitchen became a laboratory. Night after night, after finishing 12-hour shifts as an RN, I experimented with ingredients and recipes, searching for formulations that would actually work – and taste good enough that I'd want to eat them daily.

When my own milk supply dramatically increased, I knew I'd created something special. But I had no idea how many mothers were struggling with the same challenges.

A Family Mission Takes Flight

Word spread quickly through local mom groups, and suddenly my home kitchen couldn't keep up with demand. Cookies and brownies covered every surface. My grandmother helped bake. My mother and aunt packed orders. My older children assisted with packaging. My husband made USPS runs with our newborn in tow.

As orders multiplied beyond what our family could handle, we moved to a commercial kitchen where we could make twenty dozen cookies at once – though scheduling enough baking time became our new challenge.

This truly was a family business born from compassion – every cookie and brownie handcrafted with the understanding that on the other end was a mother desperate for the same support I once needed.

Beyond Products to Empowerment

I quickly realized something that competitors missed: even the most effective lactation supplements won't help mothers succeed without proper breastfeeding and pumping techniques.

Unlike companies solely focused on selling supplements, I had unique expertise as both a product creator and certified lactation consultant. Weekly Facebook Live Q&A sessions became a cornerstone of Milky Mama's approach, offering free, accessible education from a medical professional.

This commitment to empowerment through knowledge – providing both effective products and the expertise to use them properly – created a comprehensive support system that addressed the complete needs of breastfeeding mothers.

Evidence-Based Formulations

My nursing and lactation consultant background informed every formulation decision. Most notably, I intentionally excluded fenugreek – an ingredient commonly found in competing supplements – because research shows it can actually decrease milk supply in some women and often causes uncomfortable side effects for both mother and baby.

Instead, I carefully selected evidence-based herbs and ingredients that genuinely support lactation while creating treats mothers actually enjoy consuming. This medical approach transforms what could be a clinical necessity into a pleasurable self-care moment in the breastfeeding journey.

Every Milky Mama product is:

  • Developed by a practicing RN and certified lactation consultant
  • Formulated based on scientific research
  • Created to be both effective AND delicious

The Heart of Our Impact

The most rewarding aspect of growing Milky Mama has been providing mothers with exactly the support I desperately needed early on. Nothing compares to witnessing mothers cry tears of joy when they meet me or seeing photos of how much milk they pumped after using our products.

Our rapid growth revealed just how many mothers lack adequate breastfeeding support – a need even more widespread than I anticipated. Through both effective products and accessible education, we've helped over 300,000 mothers transform their breastfeeding journeys, building confidence in their bodies' capabilities and deepening their connection with their babies.

This emotional transformation – from anxiety and self-doubt to empowerment and joy – represents the true impact of our mission.

Our products have even caught the attention of celebrities facing the same universal challenges of motherhood. My husband actually replied to a Twitter post that Coco Austin made about her new baby; she saw it and reached out to us asking for help with her milk supply. Since then, we've been discovered organically by other celebrities including Chrissy Teigen and Lauren London, and featured in publications like People Magazine, USA Today, Cosmopolitan, and Romper.
